WASHINGTON: US Vice President Kamala Harris will return to work on Tuesday, her spokeswoman announced Monday, saying Harris is now clear of Covid-19 nearly a week after testing positive.
“Today, the vice president tested negative for Covid-19 on a rapid antigen test. The vice president will return to work, in person, tomorrow,” Press Secretary Kirsten Allen said, adding that Harris would still wear a mask in public for several days.
Harris, 57, went into self-quarantine on April 26 in a sign of how far the latest coronavirus strain has penetrated the Washington elite. The White House said she was asymptomatic and that President Joe Biden, 79, was not considered a close contact, as both had been traveling separately.
Multiple members of Congress announced positive tests in late April, while Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, came down with Covid in March.
The White House has publicly aired the possibility of Biden testing positive, while downplaying any potential fallout, insisting that he would be able to keep working remotely. On Saturday, Biden, who was not wearing a mask, attended a packed dinner event organized by the White House Correspondents Association.
In October 2020, before vaccines were available, then president Donald Trump spent three days in hospital receiving emergency treatment for Covid-19, which he had told Americans was not a danger.
More than 900,000 people in the United States have now died from Covid-19, which at its peak killed over 3,000 a day. Currently about 300 to 400 people die from Covid every day in the world’s richest country.
