Toyota-Maruti’s SUV launch likely in later-2022: Top 5 things to know about this Creta rival

Toyota and Maruti Suzuki are working to launch the new compact SUV by the festive season of 2022. Codenamed Toyota D22 and Maruti Suzuki YFG, the first-jointly developed SUV will be a potential rival to the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, MG Astor and Volkswagen Taigun in the Indian market. Here are top five things that you must know about the upcoming Toyota-Maruti SUV.
Spotted many times testing on the Indian roads, the Toyota D22 SUV will take the exterior design inspiration from Toyota SUVs, namely the Yaris Cross, RAV4 and Corolla Cross. As seen in the spy shots earlier, the SUV will feature a split headlamp setup with dual LED DRLs and a signature Toyota grille. The front bumper of the SUV gets a honeycomb-patterned air-dam, and the side profile is flanked by squared-off wheel arches.
Inside, the SUV is likely to share a lot of similarities with the Toyota Corolla Cross. The Toyota D22 will receive a free-flowing touchscreen infotainment system within the centre of dashboard, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic AC, connected car technology, automatic wipers and headlamps, ORVMs and electrically-adjustable driver’s seat. Moreover, Toyota might offer Advanced Driver Assistance System features too on the much-anticipated SUV.
Toyota-sourced Hybrid Powertrain
Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are planning to bring hybrid powertrains prior to the EVs in the Indian market. The upcoming Toyota-Maruti SUV will likely be available in two petrol engine options – a mild hybrid and a strong hybrid one. The former will be powered by a 1.5-litre K15 C dualjet petrol engine mated with SHVS mild-hybrid system, while the latter will probably make use of a big battery pack coupled with an electric mill.
Likely to be based on Toyota’s DNGA Platform
According to some reports, the new Maruti-Toyota SUV is expected to be based on a tweaked version of Toyota’s DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) platform. Underpinning various Toyota SUVs globally, the DNGA platform is stated to be compatible with petrol and hybrid powertrains across different body styles.
Launch in late-2022
Toyota-Maruti SUV’s test mule has been spied testing many times in Gurugram, Haryana. We expect an official reveal of the Toyota D22 SUV by June-July 2022 with the launch likely to happen before the festive season. An official announcement about the same is yet to come.
